Easily get your toddlers involved and smiling for the camera and take home your dream gallery of family pictures by using these simple strategies for your family photography session.
1. Before the Session
Make sure your toddler is well rested before your family session - a sleep deprived or physically exhausted kiddo will not be very cooperative!
Have a meal shortly before hand. The hanger will hinder your photos!
Get them excited! This is about family coming together. Think about what matters most to your toddler. Most toddlers love to play, dance, or be goofy, and if you disguise it this way, not only will they cooperate, they will have a lot of fun and I will capture the most genuine moments!
2. During the Session
Bring bribes and snacks. Bribes can be their favorite toy, stuffy, or special prize. Of course you don't want these items in your images, but it can be enough to get them warmed up and comfortable. Bring along some yummy snacks to help keep your kiddo's hanger at bay if needed :)
Do not stress. Your toddler will definitely pick up on any distress you might be feeling, and it could directly influence their mood. Stay calm, and let me regain their focus for you.
Just keep looking and smiling at the camera. It can be difficult sometimes when you are trying to get your own kids to look at the camera, but allow me to do that for you. Moments get missed because when your toddler finally looks at the camera, you aren't looking! Let me grab their attention while you keep your focus on me.
If your toddler is old enough, use delayed gratification! Promises of treats or playtime at the park afterwards is sometimes enough to get them excited about participating when they know what they have coming.
Make it fun. No one likes being told what to do, especially a tot. Instead, make it a game for them! Besides, when they are giggling and smiling, these are the most honest moments that you want to remember anyway.
3. Hire a professional photographer
This might sound obvious, but sometimes people can get this mixed up. Do your research in your area and find a photographer that has experience and talent that match your style. Things to look for:
Do they have a portfolio of images that you dream of for your family?
Do they have experience working with children?
Do they have positive reviews on Google & social media?
Do they have a legitimate website?
Do they have a business location?
Big one... do they do it for a living? (avoid hobbyists if you want real results)
Managing toddlers is not always an easy task, but it can be accomplished by an experienced professional. At Elsiebel Photography, I have years of experience working with hundreds of families with toddlers, as well as children with special needs.
