A Guide to an Unforgettable Newborn Photography Session

There's a magical quality to those early days with a newborn—tiny fingers, delicate features, and the overwhelming love that fills the room. As a newborn photographer, my goal is to freeze these fleeting moments in time, creating timeless memories for you and your family. To ensure your newborn photography session is nothing short of extraordinary, here are some invaluable tips and tricks for parents to have the absolute best experience.

1. Preparation is Key:

Before the session begins, take the time to prepare both yourself and your baby. I always send a "Newborn Instruction Guide" to my clients so they know everything they need to ensure their baby is ready for their big day. One the key things I tell parents is to make sure their newborn has been awake for a couple hours before their shoot so they are very sleepy when they arrive. This helps tremendously to get those sleepy squishy baby poses that are just precious! Along with that, it is crucial that the baby is hungry upon arrival and is fed right before the session begins. This helps keep the "hanger" away to also help your baby sleep through the session. It is completely normal, and expected, to have a few feedings throughout the session. Your newborn photographer is a professional and has experience with lots of babies and will be able to pick up on this through the session. As a professional newborn photographer, I'm here to capture the beauty of these early moments, so don't worry about perfection—let your baby's natural charm shine through. The last key point to takeaway is to just sit back and relax - let your newborn photographer do what they do best! It is completely normal as a Mom or Dad of a new baby to want to intervene and help the photographer, but this usually makes it more difficult for your baby to get sleepy. Those babies are extremely smart and aware. They can smell and hear Mom and Dad, and intervention when your photographer is trying to soothe them might cause them to fuss. You are there comfort zone and their safe place, but it is vital to follow the instructions of the photographer to help get those gorgeous pictures!

2. Embrace the Unexpected:

Babies are wonderfully unpredictable, and sometimes the most candid moments make for the most cherished photographs. Those small moments are the ones that we always miss in day to day life, so getting them on camera is invaluable! Photography never goes perfectly accordingly to plan, especially newborn photography. Sometimes babies don't like certain poses, are a little more fussy than we'd like, or are just having an off day! Keeping your little one comfortable and safe is of the upmost importance to me! There is an abundance of poses, wraps, backgrounds - so you can expect to get a gorgeous gallery even if you think things aren't going well. Remember, most newborn photography sessions are far from "smooth" or "easy". They are very challenging - but the most rewarding! So if things don't seem to be going as smoothly as you thought they would, don't stress, because you are definitely not the only one! My job is to help make your time with me as stress free and FUN as possible for you and your little one! Try to sit back and relax - take it all in, because it truly is a once in a lifetime experience for you and your baby that you'll cherish forever.

3. Trust Your Photographer:

As parents, your focus should be on enjoying the precious moments with your newborn. Trust in your photographer's expertise to capture the essence of your family. Communication is key, so feel free to share any specific ideas or concerns beforehand to ensure a seamless and enjoyable session. Your photographer has worked with lots of babies and families and has developed a technique to deal with the most difficult situations. Newborns take some time to get warmed up in the beginning of your session, so trust your professional and their process and remember to enjoy your time and be in the moment! :)

Conclusion:

As a newborn photographer, my greatest joy is capturing the love and connection within your family. By following these tips, you can make the most of your newborn photography session, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience that will be reflected in the timeless images we create together. Always communicate with your photographer any questions or concerns that you may have. Don't be afraid to bring them up during your session either! Do your research and find the Newborn Photographer that will fit you and your family best, and remember to have fun!
